Horticulture and Landscape Technologies
|
This program is designed to prepare the student for entry-level employment in the “Green Industry”. Students will complete one semester of Horticulture Essentials courses, followed by a second semester of classes emphasizing a specific skill. Specialties available include: Landscape Design, Landscape Technician, Nursery and Greenhouse Management, and Turf Specialist. The program is open entry, allowing students to complete a portion of the program, enter the workforce, then come back and complete the degree.
Horticulture is a bountiful career with possibilities including landscaping, groundskeeping, pesticide handling, spraying, and applicating, tree trimming and pruning, and nursery management. Most work is seasonal through the spring, summer, and fall, and is performed outdoors. Many jobs require responsible, self-motivated individuals who can work with minimal supervision. An ability to learn quickly and accurately follow instructions are also desirable traits in the horticulture and landscape technologies field. Communication skills and the ability to get along well with people are also important for positions that require working with customers.
