DMTC Receives Grant for Human Patient Simulator

The Delta-Montrose Technical College received a federal Carl Perkins grant to acquire a Human Patient Simulator for the Medical Education branch of the campus.  This is a mannequin that simulates vital signs including breath sounds, heart sounds, pulse, etc.  It can also be used to give shots and administer IVs.  The instructor can set it up to simulate both healthy vitals and signs that indicate health problems.
The simulator is an anatomically correct mannequin which is programmed to physically demonstrate a wide range of conditions, and realistically respond to treatment procedures.
These simulations enable future nurses and emergency medical responders to build their competencies.
“This self contained wireless unit will enable us to give our students experience with critical situations that they do not always come across during the clinical-assignment phase of their training,” explains Jody Roeber, Program Coordinator/Instructor of DMTC’s Nursing Program.
Carl D. Perkins is a Federal Grant awarded to institutions of higher learning and administered by the Colorado Department of Education.

The purpose of the Perkins Act is to develop more fully the academic, vocational, and technical skills of secondary and post-secondary students who elect to enroll in Technical Education Programs.

The grant provides assistance to students of technical programs by helping them overcome obstacles that may block their success or completion of education.
